Moderated by Bob Moore (Founder & CEO, El Paso Matters), this talk will explore Mr. Stallworth's experience infiltrating the Klu Klux Klan as an undercover police officer in Colorado Springs, CO as well as his childhood growing up in El Paso.
As the first African-American detective and the youngest detective ever in the Colorado Springs Police Department, Ron Stallworth infiltrated the ranks of the Ku Klux Klan. In 2014, Stallworth published the true story of his undercover investigation of the KKK in his book, Black Klansman. The book reached #1 on the New York Times Best Seller's List and was later adapted into a film directed by Spike Lee and produced by Jordan Peele. The film, BlacKkKlansman, debuted at the Cannes Film Festival on May 14, 2018, winning the Grand Prix Award, the second-most prestigious prize of the festival, and Ecumenical Jury Special Mention. The film went on to be nominated for 6 Academy Awards, 5 BAFTA Awards, 4 Golden Globes and 3 Screen Actors Guild Awards, winning Best Adapted Screenplay at both the Academy Awards and BAFTA Awards. Also, the American Film Institute (AFI) named it one of the Top 10 Movies of the Year for 2018.
